The Samoyed is a working dog breed that originated in Siberia, it is said to be one of the 14 ancient breeds. The Samoyed is considered an all purpose working breed used for herding, sledging, and companionship. They are a double coated breed, having coarser guard hairs and a soft thick undercoat. This gorgeous coat does take some grooming especially if the animal has been sterilized. Their coat is very functional, keeping them protected from cold and hot temperatures as well as rain and snow. You should not need to trim and should never shave this breed as it can damage the hair follicle and make their coat non functional.

The Samoyed is a fun loving and highly intelligent breed that is loyal and affectionate. They create strong bonds with their people and should never be aggressive towards humans, young or old. They are not a guard dog, despite their loud talkative nature. Because of their high intelligence they can be seen as stubborn or difficult, they are not blindly obedient. Sammy’s make wonderful family dogs and tolerate apartment living with daily walks. While they are just as happy to sit around and watch TV as they are to get out and work, they do require physical and mental stimulation. They will keep up with whatever speed you set but can become bored and get in to trouble without proper exercise and enriching activities. Samoyeds flourish with human companionship and are not suited for a solitary life.
